MISSION
STATEMENT
Martinez Opera
was founded in 1889 and proudly resurrected by a group of committed conductors,
directors, artistic advisors and musicians realizing the need to promote
the classical arts in the city of Martinez.
Known as a blue collar community surrounded by refineries and government
offices, Martinez holds the nations record for performing the most operatic
productions in one year back in 1889. The recent awareness of the old
Opera Company only proves that the classical arts is for everyone, and
that by cultivating the once thriving company will bring many to appreciate
its importance to the community. MTZO will also collaborate
with other organizations to bring "cross cultural" and "multi-cultural"
projects that will stimulate groups not normally exposed to the world
of opera.
The principal founder and President is Maria Billingsley, a resident of
Martinez for over 19 years. Her vision is to establish a center where
children, teens and adults can experience and be part of a classical arts
organization dedicated to education and appreciation of the fine art of
Opera and classical music.
MTZO intends to provide Martinez and other communities
with a cultural center that performs full scale professional Operatic
performances as well as offer the community cross cultural experiences.
MTZO is dedicated to a consistent growth pattern in conjunction
with business owners and residents and will offer numerous Outreach
Programs to adults, teens and children as well as establish a
Youth Orchestra (MYO), Opera
Chorus, and the Hispanic Opera Singers of America organization
(HOSA). The cultivation of classical arts represents an important step
in any community. Opera can be enjoyed by everyone, and with our talented
staff, MTZO will bring innovation and classical music
to Contra Costa County.
